Sonabai: Another Way of Seeing Mingei International Museum; Balboa Park, San Diego, CA July 25, 2009 until September 5, 2010 In 2001, Dr. Huyler first traveled to the remote central Indian village of Puhputra in the state of Chhatisgarh to document the life of Sonabai Rajawar for a chapter in his book, Daughters of India. He was so impressed by Sonabai's home, her art and her life story, that Huyler resolved to collect the material for an exhibition, book and film solely about her. India Adorned: Selections from Mingei International's Stephen Huyler Collection Mingei International Museum; Balboa Park, San Diego, CA July 12, 2008 through mid-September, 2009 On Stephen Huyler's'first trip to India, in 1971-72, he conducted research on Indian embroidered and appliquéd textiles. As many of the crafts documented were being destroyed, he began to selectively collect fine examples. Over his subsequent decades of work in India, Dr. Huyler continued to expand his collection into other forms of folk and decorative arts and crafts. More Information

Meeting God: Elements of Hindu Devotion American Museum of Natural History September 8, 2001 through March 31, 2002 An exhibition about the daily devotion of the Hindus, a religion that is the central focus of one in five human beings. Comprised of photographs, shrines and sacred articles, Meeting God encourages the viewer to interact and become involved with questions about their own beliefs. Meeting God: Elements of Hindu Devotion/Tour Cartwright Hall Art Museum; Bradford, England September 26, 2003 - January 11, 2004 This exhibition is the travelling version of the original "Meeting God" exhibition, specifically designed to tour throughout Europe and beyond. The curator at the Cartwright Hall Art Museum recognized the importance of bringing information about Hinduism to the people of Bradford, which has a very large Muslim population. India Unfolding Center for Maine Contemporary Art - Rockport, Maine June 14th through July 20th, 2003 In this multi-media exhibition, photographer and cultural anthropologist Stephen Huyler pushes through boundaries, printing his colorful images on paper, fabric, brushed metal, and Plexiglas. He combines sculptural forms with interactive displays and videos to create the overlapping veils of sensory experience that he finds so common in India. More Information
