INDIA UNFOLDING
CENTER FOR MAINE CONTEMORARY ART
June 14 through July 20, 2003
India is a country where the senses overlay and infuse one another. India Unfolding is a multi-media, interactive exhibition, challenging pre-conceptions and opening doors into new experiences. For the past thirty-two years, Stephen Huyler has conducted a photographic survey of India. His images focus upon the private moments of daily and seasonal life: expressions of intimacy and personality, of creativity and community. As a cultural anthropologist, Huyler has had unique access to homes, temples, and rituals. Huyler's shows have always been known for their unusual perceptions. In India Unfolding, he pushes through boundaries, printing his colorful images on fabric, brushed metal, and Plexiglas, combining sculptural forms with interactive displays and videos to create the overlapping veils of sensory experience that he finds so common in India.
